DPG deposit bottles
Deposit collection and deposit billing via Deutsche Pfandsystem GmbH (DPG) are central elements of the German deposit system for single-use beverage containers.
Here is a brief overview of the process:
Deposit collection
1. First distributor registration: Companies that place beverages in disposable packaging on the German market for the first time must register with the DPG. This will entitle them to participate in the DPG deposit system.
2. Packaging labelling: Companies registered as first distributors must label their single-use drinks packaging with a unique barcode and the DPG logo. This enables the packaging to be identified in the take-back and deposit billing system.
3. Deposit collection: A deposit is charged to the customer when drinks packaging is sold. The amount of the deposit is set by law and varies depending on the type of packaging.
Deposit billing
1. Take-back: Customers can return empty disposable drinks packaging to reverse vending machines in supermarkets and other retail outlets. The machines scan the barcode, identify the packaging as part of the DPG system and refund the deposit amount.
2. Data transfer: The reverse vending machines and take-back centres record the packaging units taken back and transmit this data electronically to the DPG. This includes information on the number and type of packaging taken back.
3. Billing: Billing between the parties involved takes place on the basis of the return data transmitted. DPG coordinates the financial transactions so that the initial distributors are charged for the returned packaging and the retailers or take-back centres are refunded for the deposit amounts paid out.
4. Financial flow: The DPG guarantees that the deposit money collected is distributed between the initial distributors, retailers and take-back centres in accordance with the actual take-back volume. This ensures the integrity and fairness of the system.
4. Transparency and compliance: The DPG monitors the correct implementation of deposit collection and billing. Regular reports and audits ensure compliance with legal requirements and promote the transparency of the system.
